Hello, my name is

Mioara Mandea

Geophysicist | Expert in Earth’s Magnetic & Gravity Fields
2025 curieux!

About me

I am focused on measuring, mapping, and understanding the diverse magnetic fields encountered in Earth's environment and in near-Earth-like planets' space.

Science for me is both a profession and a passion.

Throughout my career, I have explored the Earth’s magnetic field from ground observatories to satellite missions, modelled the core field and its time variations, and used magnetic observations to investigate the deep Earth, including the conductivity of the lower mantle and fluid dynamics at the core–mantle boundary. I have also extended this perspective to planetary magnetism, studying the magnetic environments of planets such as Mars, Mercury, and Venus.

Today, I serve as Head of the Science Coordination Department at CNES, where I help guide scientific strategy and foster collaborations across the geosciences and space research communities.

I have always enjoyed sharing knowledge – mentoring students, supporting young researchers, and contributing to the scientific community through collaborative projects and service roles. Helping others grow in geophysics and planetary science remains one of the most rewarding parts of my career

What I do

My research focuses on measuring, modeling, and interpreting magnetic and gravity fields to better understand Earth’s deep interior, its temporal changes, and the magnetic environments of other planets.

Driven by a passion for geophysics, I combine scientific investigation with collaboration, mentoring,  and service to the scientific community to advance knowledge and support future generations of researchers.
